Different Approaches

Homeschooling can take on many different forms and philosophies. Different philosophies can be tailored to your family's beliefs and values, as well as your children's unique learning style and needs. Here are some of the most common homeschooling philosophies:

Traditional or School-at-Home

This approach follows the same curricula and standards as a conventional school, with emphasis on rote learning and standardized tests.

Unschooling

Unschooling is a student-led approach that focuses on learning through exploration and hands-on experiences. Unschooling is often considered the most flexible approach to homeschooling.

Charlotte Mason

This approach is based on Charlotte Mason's educational philosophy, which emphasizes nature study, living books, real-world experiences, and meaningful relationships.

Classical

This method follows a three-stage approach to learning, with emphasis on grammar, logic, and rhetoric.

Waldorf

Waldorf education is based on the educational philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, and emphasizes imagination, creativity, and a holistic approach to learning. Oak Meadow is popular curriculum for Waldorf Homeschoolers.

Montessori

Montessori education is based on Maria Montessori's educational philosophy, which emphasizes self-directed learning, exploration, and hands-on activities.

Eclectic

Most homeschoolers in our area fall into this category. This approach combines elements of many or all of the different approaches listed above.

Unit Studies

Unit studies focus on a singular theme for a unit and then incorporates different academic areas of studies in that unit.
