The Best Homeschooling Advice

We’re going to make a bold claim: we've uncovered the single best piece of advice you need to be successful in homeschooling. So what’s the one piece of advice that applies to nearly every homeschooler?

If we could offer you only one tip for homeschooling success, this would be it.

Make Connections.

Homeschooling thrives on connection—five kinds, in particular:

1. Parent-to-Parent Connections

Build relationships with other homeschool parents. They’ll become your support system, a source of new ideas, and encouragement when things get tough.

2. Child-to-Child Connections

Find opportunities for your kids to connect and grow with others. In Butte County, we’re fortunate to have countless events and groups that make these friendships possible. (Check out our Vendors and Events pages for ideas!)

3. Cross-Subject Connections

Learning is richer when subjects overlap. The brain loves making connections—it helps ideas stick! Try exploring how a scientific discovery fits into the historical moment, writing about it, and building a model that incorporates math.

4. Family Connections

Your relationship with your child is more important than any curriculum. If lessons lead to repeated tension or frustration, it’s time to pivot. Learning should strengthen your connection, not strain it. Allow yourself to be curious about how your child learns best and what their interests are. Remember to connect before you direct.

5. Community Connections

Get involved! Whether through volunteering, clubs, or local events, community experiences bring learning to life and remind us that education flourishes in abundance, not isolation.

When in doubt, make connections—and watch your homeschool world thrive.
